What are Essential Oils

Essential oils are pure, concentrated extracts distilled from over 400 aromatic plants. The plants contain hormones, antibacterial properties, pheromones and cell regenerating agents.

The extraction process concentrates the essence of the plant. When used properly the oils can provide us with beneficial physical and psychological effects. For example relaxing muscles and relieving mental tension as well as lifting, stabilising and balancing our moods.

Of all the essential oils produced worldwide today approximately only 5% are available for aromatherapy purposes. Most are produced for the food flavouring, perfumery and pharmaceutical industries. At least one consumable that is used by us contains essential oils, like tooth paste, soaps and cleaning products.

Only 100% pure and natural essential oils possess the true characteristics of the desired plant and they can not be reproduced synthetically. Where the plant is grown, the part of the plant used and the extraction process are all factors that effect the quality of the oil. It is important to purchase the oil from a reliable supplier and ensure they are 100% pure, natural and unadulterated. They should not contain fragrance as this is manmade and synthetic. Fragrance has no therapeutic benefits, unlike pure essential oils, and can nullify any benefit you will receive from essential oils.

When you inhale the aroma of an essential oil, receptor cells in our nose transmit impulses about the aroma to the olfactory area of the brain. The olfactory bulb registers and processes the smell, working quickly on nearby systems that control memory, emotions, sexual feelings, hormones and heart rate. This is why essential oils can alter your moods and feelings, counteract stress, stimulate or relax your mind and body

It is interesting to note that no two people in this world are influenced by the same essential oil in exactly the same way and manner. What is more, even the same person can be significantly affected differently, by the same oil depending on surroundings, time or mood.

Depending on the oil, it can take only seconds for an essential oil to reach the brain through the sense of smell and minutes for it to be absorbed into the blood stream through the skin. Essential oils have an affinity with the skins natural oils allowing this rapid absorption. They enter and leave the body very efficiently leaving no toxic residue behind. They are excreted through the normal bodily functions including through the lungs via exhalation and through the skin via perspiration.

Essential oils can have a very positive effect on blood circulation playing an important part in bringing nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and stimulating the lymphatic system to dispose of waste products. Essential oils can also help stimulate the immune system enabling us to fight bacteria, virus and fungi with greater efficiency and success.

All oils sold by Massage.co.nz are certified 100% pure, natural and unadulterated.  We can source almost any essential oil you want, so if you can not find what you are looking for, drop us a line and we will do the finding for you.

Fitness-related Benefits of Massage

Ask someone their reason for getting a massage and you’re likely to hear “because it feels good”. Research shows that the massage you get to relieve stress can also have a positive effect on your muscle-building capabilities and fitness level.
